He’d hate me so much for this one, but I think it’d be a great first car.

Get him an Echo. They are awesome.
And throw a case of Krown in the trunk :o)

Just needs a Coors Melling #9 paint job to set it off!
I like 80s Tbirds and Cougars.

Hell, 16 year old me in 2016 would have loved that. I couldn’t wait to impress my friends with my d i g i t a l d a s h b o a r d.

No that’s way too cool to be a first car.
Get him a Dodge Aries.

5.0l 86 tbird with 23K? Sure, it don’t got the blue teeth, or Snapple Car play, but holy cow man - that is a heck of an opportunity.

Screw the kid. Buy it for meeeee

$6000 for a T-Bird. Hard pass. Get him a G35. Best bang for the buck.

I have nothing against the choice, cool car, but the miles are worriesome. I looked at a Dodge Dynasty with similar miles for my (I guess I am kind of a mean dad, but, hey, I was paying for it). Cosmetically it was good, but cars that sit that much can have issues, seals and hoses dry out and leak, etc. All fixable, but not always the creampuff you may imagine.

Low milage, good shape, would drive... But CP IMO.
2 grand. 3 tops, and that’s pushing it.

If your son hates you for that one, get a new son .
But, uh, seriously. Don’t get that for your kid. He will literally die being an idiot in winter. Yes your kid will be an idiot in winter. Saying otherwise is only lying to yourself. (And no, I’m not saying that because I want it. I don’t want an ‘86 T-Bird, I want an ‘86 Escort GT. ‘89 T-Bird. )

... you realize a turbo Aries would be cooler, right? Because seriously. It would be. And god help us all if he finds out about Relentless.

My daughters first car will almost certainly be a manual Miata; hard to text and only one friend rides at a time.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 23:04 |

I’m not sure what your budget is but I’d go for something newer (read:safer). The perfect first car is slow and safe. Auto accidents are the number one killer for that demographic for a reason.
![]() 08/23/2018 at 23:04 |

I never said Turbo.

Can you be MY dad?! I'd think you're pretty damn cool if you bought me this!

Sweet. And no one else at school would have one.

Get him a car with a manual transmission, and you will save him the cost
of over
five automatic transmission rebuilds over his lifetime....

OK.

Don’t lie, you want it for yourself!
WAnt your kid to hate you? Buy him a 1st-gen Compass, FWD, with the CVT. He will literally plot your death as you sleep, LOL.

This is the correct choice, and actually a really good deal for what’s essentially the best NA you could buy. Seriously, buy this now. Although you may end up wanting to keep it for yourself.

That is WAY too nice to be someone’s first car.

I hear the Miata is a great snow car too.

I don’t have any kids, but if I did, knowing that young drivers tend to crash, I’d definitely look for something much safer than that. That car is pretty unique (not my style, but tastes differ), but for that money I’d be looking at something from the past 20 years. I don’t think a classic is really a good first car.

Well, yes. It would be mine.

That might be too much uh... How prepared to be grandparents are you and mom?

Get a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor at auction, they go rather cheaply in some regions. They are also relatively safe, though I’d recommend taking your kid to an advanced driving class that includes track time so he learns the limits of his vehicle.
Locally around here ProFormance offers classes like that. About $500ish.

LSD plus slightly oversized winter tires, she'll be fine.
![]() 08/24/2018 at 07:07 |

I’d get him something with air bags and a stick. Ford Aspire sounds about right. Pretty darn reliable, cheap, safe (ask me how I know), fuel efficient, and so ugly his friends won’t want to ride in it. They are also super simple and easy to fix if something does break.

Counterpoint:
Teach your son how to handle RWD in the winter and he’ll be fine.

OH MY GOD!!! You looking to adopt? I would be super stoked to have that as a first car. I would probably stuff it into a ditch though.
![]() 08/24/2018 at 10:20 |

God, I had an 85 Aries as my first car. White with Cat Piss Yellow® interior. No turbo.

If you make your kid drive a 2.2 TBI, I’m calling CPS. And the Hague.
![]() 08/24/2018 at 11:56 |

It builds character.
![]() 08/24/2018 at 12:01 |

A Ford Escort without power steering builds character.
The 2.2 TBI just gives you cancer.

Oo h yes, especially in that pinkish magenta they came in.

Posted mostly in jest. I, however, would love to have it. I thought they were cool as hell back in the 80's. The Mercury Cougar, even more so.

1. I posted mostly in jest, as my son would most likely inherit my Focus ZX-3, and dad would get a newer car.
2. He’s 15. I’d better have at least 10 years before I’m getting hit up for babysitting duty of any sort.

10 years, are they going to be babysitting you?
Obviously I was joking as well.
